God BeamsWe are enjoying a pocket of sunbeams, or "God Beams" as some would say, while the rest of the valley is under dreary skies. Antique Clothes Pins 01/22/2010
PASSING THEM ON I inherited my mother and mother-in-law's handmade "clothes pin bags" along with a variety of clothes pins. I feel privileged to use their laundry tools as it makes ordinary days special and brings a bond of womanhood that cannot die. Sun Dried Laundry 01/21/2010
WASH DAYSunshine and warm breezes dry the laundry quickly. The Amish use "A Pulley Line" that allows them to stand on the porch and extend the line to a post some distance away. It results in one long line of laundry flying high in the wind. Gathering 01/19/2010
JANUARY THAWWhen the weather breaks around mid-January, I clear my schedule and head to the woods to gather birch and willow. If old man winter hangs around too long I have plenty of inventory to keep me busy indoors. Leaving a Trail 01/19/2010

WOODLAND WALKAfter weeks of cold temps and quiet solitude the forest was alive with activity and melody. The crow called continuously from on high while an Indian hen gave the warning that a visitor was in the woods. Nuthatches cackled in the distance as chipmunks scolded my presence. Although only 26 degrees, the sun was warm and the air was calm making it a delightful winter walk. The new green moss gives the promise that spring is on the way! Today 01/10/2010
SUNDAY CHURCHTwo buggies went passed the house today shortly after 7:00am. More buggies followed every ten minutes or so. Last came the young boys in spring wagons. They were heading to church at the "tight-end" of the valley. It was a chilly 13 degrees this morning. Follow the buggy tracks and "road apples" and you will find the meeting place. Preparing for Sunday 01/09/2010
THE BENCH WAGON The long black wagon is used to transport benches. The Amish do not worship in a church building but meet every other Sunday in a different home. Preparing for Sunday is quite a task with cousins and aunts all helping to clean, rake, and scrub the property. By Saturday sundown, the work is completed and everyone anticipates a full day of fellowship and rest. Earth's Quiet Slumber 01/08/2010
A TIME OF RESTMozart's Lullaby* Sleep little baby and rest, Birds are asleep in their nest. Garden and meadow are still, Sun has gone down 'neath the hill. Silver the moon in the sky, Shines in the window near by. Through the whole house not a sound, Slumber and peace all around; So, sleep now my darling, sleep well. *Authorities differ on whether Mozart actually wrote this Lullaby. However, it has been associated with Mozart for so many years, that it is now generally accepted as coming from his pen. | A WINTER SUNSETA WINTER ORCHARDA WINTER SKYA WINTER FORESTCopyright © 2010-2012 Natural Designs.
