Ascension Day
The Amish close their schools, shops, markets, and sawmills to celebrate Ascension Day. Buggies are heading to the river at Mill Creek, McVeytown, and to Greenwood Furnace State Park to enjoy a picnic with family and friends.
Ascension Day is the 40th day after Easter and occurs 10 days before Pentecost. It celebrates Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven after his death on the cross. The date depends upon the phase of the moon in a particular year. Ascension Day is always celebrated on a Thursday.
