Gathering is about being resourceful.  Most gathering tools can be found around your house or at the local hardware store.   Years ago, I collected material with my bare hands knowing little about protection.  Only later did I begin to develop a working repertoire and uniform.  With 30 years of experience in foraging, the lessons I have learned can now be passed on to you.
